Concrete Laboratory Testing Technician Level 2

Concrete Laboratory Testing Technician Level 2 is an individual who has demonstrated the knowledge and ability to properly perform, record, and report the results of advanced laboratory procedures for aggregates and concrete. 

Attendee must currently hold the ACI Concrete Laboratory Testing Technician Level 1 certification and provide at least one year (2000 hours) of approved work experience or a combination of work experience and education. 

The Chapter does not currently offer training or a review session for this certification.

SCOPE AND KNOWLEDGE

This program requires demonstration of the knowledge and hands-on skills covered on the Job Task Analysis (JTA):

JTA for ACI Laboratory Testing Technician—Level 2

The program requires a working knowledge of the following ACI and ASTM documents:

  • ACI 214R-11—Evaluation of Strength Test Results of Concrete*

  • ACI 211.1-91—Selecting Proportions for Concrete*

  • ASTM C192/C192M – 16a—Making and Curing Concrete Test Specimens in the Laboratory
    [This standard also requires the knowledge and ability to perform ASTM C143/C143M (Slump), C173/C173M and C231/C213M (Air Content), C138/C138M (Unit Weight), and C1064/C1064M (Temperature).]

  • ASTM C470/C470M – 15—Molds for Forming Concrete Test Cylinders Vertically*

  • ASTM C496/C496M – 11—Splitting Tensile Strength of Cylindrical Concrete Specimens*

  • ASTM C42/C42M – 16—Obtaining and Testing Drilled Cores and Sawed Beams of Concrete*

  • ASTM C157/C157M – 08(2014)—Standard Test Method for Length Change of Hardened Hydraulic-Cement Mortar and Concrete

          *Written exam only

CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

ACI will grant certification only to those applicants who meet all of the following requirements:

  1. Have at least one year (2000 hours) of approved work experience or a combination of work experience and education, AND
  2. Hold current certification as an ACI Concrete Laboratory Testing Technician—Level 1, and
  3. Obtain a passing grade on the ACI written examination, AND
  4. Successfully complete the ACI performance examination.

The two-hour written examination is open-book and consists of approximately 75 multiple-choice questions. There are between eight and 12 questions on each of the documents.

To pass the written examination, both of the following conditions must be met:

  1. At least 60% correct for each of the required standards, AND
  2. A minimum score of 70% overall.

The performance examination is closed-book and requires actual demonstration of ASTM Practices C192/C192M and C157/C157M. The examinee is judged on his/her ability to correctly perform all of the required steps for each standard procedure.

Recertification is necessary every five years and requires fulfillment of the ACI Concrete Laboratory Testing Technician—Level 1 requirements and successful completion of both the written and performance examinations.

AMERICANS WITH DISABILITY ACT

Individuals requesting special accommodations enabling them to participate in ACI certification examinations must submit a letter from their primary physician to the Las Vegas Chapter ACI describing the physical challenge and providing a proposed solution (i.e. more time, a reader for the questions, physical assistance, etc.).  The Las Vegas Chapter ACI will forward the request and physician’s letter to ACI for direction.  Since the notification and formulation of appropriate accommodations takes time, candidates must make their request and submit the physician letter to the Las Vegas Chapter ACI at least three weeks prior to a certification examination session to formulate appropriate accommodations, arrange for their availability at the session, and accept the registration.

CANCELLATION POLICY

Participants may cancel or transfer their registration to another session by emailing: [email protected] no later than 7 business days before the testing session.

  • Cancellations will receive a refund of the registration fee minus a $100 cancellation fee.
  • Transfers will be issued a coupon code for the registration fee less a $30 transfer fee which is valid for one year from the date of issuance. This code may be used for any future certification or training.
